Wisdom quote
There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life - happiness, freedom and peace of mind - are always attained by giving them to someone else.

Living in Paradise and having a window seat

I just got back from the Sand Bar in Camps Bay. Once again, after spending the day on the beach and playing volleyball, I ended up there with friends for a bite, a drink and a chat. After Roland and Jobst left, I stayed on, thinking, contemplating, relaxing, enjoying, .... and it dawned on me that this is paradise, and when you sit in the Sand Bar, you also got a window seat. Just when I wanted to leave, bill already paid, a woman walked in with her son...

Le Restau du Coeur launched - feeding needy people in Cape Town

My good friend Thierry Leclair (with whom I share my birthday :)) has sent me this letter. It's about "Le Restau du Coeur", an initiative by his wife Mireille and our mutual friend Pierre (plus a lot of other French and not so French members) to feed and support needy people in Cape Town.

Your support is greatly appreciated!

From IOL.co.za: Chilean commuters continue their free ride

Just found this on IOL: "Commuters in Santiago are enjoying a fourth day of free bus rides as the government waives fares in a tacit acknowledgement that the city's new transport system is still not working properly." Imagine the Cape Town City Council doing something similar?! That would mean free rides way past 2010! ;)

HypnoBirthing Practitioner Training in Johannesburg

My friend Jessica is coming to South Africa again to give Hypnobirthing Training. Read below what she's got to say.

Guy Lieberman's Universal Face Documentary at the Labia Theatre

"A captivating music documentary exploring Kabbalah through song, spoken word and stunning visual imagery." This is how Guy Lieberman describes his Israeli music documentary, which is soon to be screened at the Labia in Cape Town.

Enjo: Cleaning without Chemicals

Two years ago my mom gave me two cleaning cloths from Germany - claiming they would drastically reduce if not eliminate the use of chemicals in the household. I've largely used them in the bathroom and in the kitchen, but due to their size not for the dishes. It was therefore with delight to stumble across Enjo, an Austrian company, marketing a similar product here in South Africa.

Movie: Walk on Water

The German-Israeli co-production "Walk on Water" is now on at the Labia.

The movie is about a Mossad killer who gets put on a case to find a Nazi war criminal. He does so by playing 'tourguide' for the German's grandson, who's come to Israel to convince his sister (who's working in a Kibbutz) to return to Germany for their father's 70th birthday.

South Africa's Misunderstood 'Dual Economy'

At regular intervals, the South African New Economics Network (SANE) has been publishing information about the economic situation in South Africa, and how ill-informed and -equipped both politicians and business people are when it comes to dealing with the real issues this country is grappling with. Here, for the first (and maybe last) time I am publishing an entire issue, using this site to bring it to your attention. The rest can be found on their website. But take some time to read through it, and keep in mind that this isn't only a South African problem, but a global one. Feedback, as always, is welcome.

FreeCycling - great idea that could do with your participation

According to IOL, Freecycling has arrived in South Africa: "An international culture of "freecycling" has infiltrated South Africa, where about 1 000 people are already using the Internet to give away theirs and pick up other people's unwanted stuff.

Freecycle Network is similar to auction site eBay and community forum Craigslist, in which people from all over the world place their goods in an online marketplace.

As opposed to eBay, however, on Freecycle the goods cannot be sold or bought and people are required to pick up their finds instead of them being shipped."

Haven't gone into any depth, but it certainly looks like a project worth supporting! If you're already a freecycler, why not drop me a note here about your experiences.\

The City of Cape Town - a story retold

You remember me trashing the City in my last blog entry, and my confusing the City's website with the one of the Provincial Government, which I later commented on in that same post.

It was only fair that I paid the City's one a visit, given that they are the ones boasting about "This City works for you". Well, this is what I found.

City of Cape Town - The City that doesn't work for you

The City of Cape Town has the slogan "This City works for you". Few slogans are worth their letters - this one isn't one of them. Not only is it ambiguous, it's also untrue. Another sad example of spin-doctoring, portraying an image that is anything but real. Why am I saying this?

Ethical Co-Op: Organic Vegetables in Cape Town

I just received my first delivery of fruits and vegetables from the Ethical Co-Op. If you are tired of the poisoned, tasteless and half-dead rubbish they sell in the supermarket, give the Co-Op a try.

Complete list of South African municipalities' names

Yesterday, again with the splendid help of Opera (using its ability to open pages in the background - which, btw, is an invention of mine while I was working for them), I downloaded all municipalities in South Africa from routes.co.za. With a little search and replace I formatted them so that they could be inserted into a MySQL table. In all but 10 minutes I had 270-odd entries nicely inserted. Now that list/table is ready for sharing. :) If anyone of you needs it for a web project of yours, please let me know.

Craigslist: From a black man who thinks

This is how the Net works: I look up an article on DER SPIEGEL, which I have anchored in my Opera sidebar. There I find a reference to Graig Newmark's Craigslist, which is much better known inside the USA than outside, but which is now making forays into the European market, too, with its free classified site called Kijiji. So on Craigslist I looked up the "Best of"... and found this gem of a posting, which I believe to be so very relevant for South Africa, too.

Cape Town Tourist Attractions on Google Earth

Today I took some time to update my Cape Town Tourist Attractions KMZ file for Google Earth. As better image maps became available for the Peninsula and CBD, I was able to correct a number of placemarks I had set in the previous version. I also added 17 new placemarks. Enjoy the Mother City and Cape Peninsula!

At last: It's raining in Cape Town!

It's been a long dry spell, but today the floodgates opened! At last! Not only that, but it is being accompanied by magic thunder and lightning, something every Capetonian knows is a rare treat down here. There's always an amazing -dare I say 'electrifying'- energy out there when it rains and thunders, and today is just the same.

Nedbank or The Joy of Electronic Banking

I just logged onto Nedbank's website to pay my phone bill. Today is the 10th. The transfer, which should not take longer than 15 seconds to show up on Telkom's side, will -according to Nedbank- be effected on 13 April. That's 3 days from now! I'm only left with this to say: fuck you, Nedbank!

It's not just the clothing sector that's in trouble

Last week there was much talk on CapeTalk about a local clothing company closing one of their factories in Salt River. In response I sent morning show presenter Mike Wills an email with my take on it. Read it below and let me have your thoughts on this subject.
