Wisdom quote
Religions have exploited human fear and the human tendency to be egoistic. They have created many techniques to suppress. It is not very difficult to suppress, but it is very costly, because your whole energy becomes divided against itself, fighting, and then the whole life is dissipated.
- Osho

Helmar Rudolph: My Blog :: Restaurant Reviews

This category carries short restaurant reviews of the places I have visited. I hope it provides you with some insight into what you can expect.

Restaurant Review: The Best Ugly Rhythm Bar and Restaurant

It's been a very long time since my last restaurant review. In fact, it's the first one for 2008 and also the last for the year, and because that in itself is special, so is this review.

Last night, Melinda, Oliver, Anne and I paid "The Best Ugly Rhythm Bar and Restaurant" in 79 Main Rd., Green Point, a visit. "Produced" by Hungarians Robert Tuboly, of Kennedy's Cigar Bar fame, and Victor Boros, it's located where the Belgian restaurant 0932 previously was.

Barely open for three days, you ask yourself if it's a good thing to dine at a place that new that not even the paint has dried properly, figuratively speaking, but caution to the wind, there we sat, on a beautiful Thursday night, trying out Cape Town's latest restaurant cum jazz bar addition.

Restaurant Review: Haiku

I've been wanting to give Haiku a try for quite some time now, having heard good and bad reviews about the place. So, as it's also been a while since Carla and I graced the Cape Town restaurant scene with our presence, it was more than welcome that she SMS'd me the other night, inviting me to said Haiku. And off we went...

Restaurant Preview: Chicolate, Cnr Church/Loop St.

The other night, on my way to the Froggies' dinner at Addis in Cape (which turned out to be a massive disappointment... R130 for a starter and a dessert, no main course was served!), I stumbled across Chicolate.

Restaurant Review: Wembley Square (Salushi and Sinn's)

Since the opening of the Wembley Square complex just off Roeland Street, I've spent quite some time over there, not only because of their free wifi access and welcoming, open spaces and young and friendly vibes.

Restaurant Review: Chef - Ristorante Italiano (update)

It's been over two months already that Carla and I finally managed to pay 'Chef' a visit - we've been wanting to do this for a long time.

Chef and owner Nicolai Pareti has created a warm and cosy atmosphere at 3/5 Rose Street, just outside the Cape Quarter. There weren't too many diners that night, so it was nice and quiet, Italian music playing in the background.

Restaurant Review: Madam Zingara, Foreshore

Every Capetonian who isn't exactly living under a rock knows Madame Zingara. An institution on the local dining scene for many years, Madame Zingara's spot in Bree Street burnt down a while ago, so they relocated to what must clearly be the trendiest and hottest place for a restaurant: between the elevated highways on the Foreshore. All that is forgotten, though, once you step into their world, situated in an imported Spiegeltent ("mirror tent") from Belgium.

Restaurant Review: Soho, Napier St

It's been a while since my last restaurant review, so I thought I'd throw this one in before you succumb to withdrawal symptoms.

Soho is a Lifestyle Lodge cum Restaurant cum Cafe cum 'friggin awesome roof terrace' in Napier Street, just up from Bronx - if you know what I mean. ;)

Restaurant Review: The Nose Wine Bar, Cape Quarter

I've been going to the Nose Bar for many years. They are one of the few places in Cape Town where you a decent array of wines by the glass. Also, I really dig their sofa in the back, because there you can chill out over a glass or two in a relaxed environment. Also, when they started out, their menu was fresh, the meals original and well-prepared/presented. That's changed though.

Restaurant Review: Jonkershuis, Groot Constantia

The other night Nadège and I paid a visit to Jonkershuis Restaurant on Groot Constantia Estate. It's been something like eight years since I last went there - and then it was for a wedding that has since been divorced again. Bad omen?

Restaurant Review: Urban Chic, Long Street

It's been a while since the last review, and truth to be told, I haven't been to many new places lately. It's been the usual and enjoyable 'fare' at places like The Sandbar in Camps Bay, my absolutely favourite afternoon hangout, or Wasabi in Constantia, where they not only serve excellent food but also offer free wifi access.

That said, the other night Nadège and I paid a visit to Urban Chic in Long Street, upstairs from Gallery Café. As it was Monday and World Cup soccer was on, we had the place pretty much to ourselves.

Restaurant Review: La Perla, Sea Point

This time Carla and I tried out La Perla. Dennis and Nadege had given us a bit of a warning about it, but we wanted to see for ourselves. La Perla does enjoy a great location - right on Sea Point Beach Roard, with lovely views of the ocean. But that's pretty much all there is to it, because the rest is less than impressive.

Restaurant Review: Tokara, Stellenbosch

Last week a group of friends and I decided to try out Tokara on Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and (sort of) Franschhoek. Tokara, which is also a winery, is best known for its awesome sunset views, which on that day didn't disappoint either. Shortly after it became a bit chilly, so we moved inside...

Restaurant Review: Pastis Brasserie, Constantia

Last Thursday Leila and I decided to pay Pastis, a fairly new restaurant in the High Constantia Complex (Groot Constantia Rd), a visit. I've never been there before, and after recently indulging in fish and sushi, I thought a French touch wouldn't do any harm.

Restaurant Review: Hong, Vineyard Rd., Claremont

Having celebrated my 39th last week, Shannon invited me to Hong, a Japanese Restaurant in a rather unexpected place. Inconspicuously situated upstairs from a bed shop in Vineyard Rd, Claremont, just opposite Edgars and with only a simple boardwalk sign that is so easily missed, I did indeed drive past it first time round.

Restaurant Review: Five Flies, 14-16 Keerom Street

12 years in Cape Town, yet the first time at Five Flies. They still had a special on, with prices from a few years ago (99?), but were also still running their Winter's Special, prompting Tamara, Vicky and I to pay them a visit.

Restaurant Review: Constantia Uitsig

The other day Dirk and I went to Uitsig for lunch. It was a beautiful winter's day, and the venue couldn't have been more perfect.

Restaurant Review: Oak & Vigne, Greyton

Sunday Tamara and I drove out to Greyton for lunch. Greyton is about 1.5hrs from Cape Town down the N2. Turning off just before Caledon, you follow a picturesque road for a while before reaching the village.

Restaurant Review: Tobago's, Radisson Hotel, Mouille Point

We never just eat out once when Halfrid's in town, so despite still being full from lunch at Paranga, we went for dinner too - but deciding to just have something smallish.

Options abounded, but because of a previous visit to the Radisson Hotel, we chose it again.

Restaurant Review: Paranga, Camps Bay

Pretty much every weekend I spend time in Camps Bay, but until yesterday I haven't been to Paranga, right opposite from where we play beach volleyball. One of my brothers was in town again for a day, and while driving him and his guest around for a bit of sight-seeing, we decided to pop in at Paranga for lunch.

Restaurant Review: Simply Asia

Simply Asia is a restaurant chain (franchise?) with several outlets across South Africa. As I have visited the Heritage Square, Lakeside and Cavendish Square ones in the past, I think it's time for a quick review.
